We’re away on our festive break for two weeks. We’ll return in 2012 with news on Oxford and UK shows, fresh new interviews, plenty of new tunes and anything else you can think off. Thank you to everyone who’s supported the website and Lord ‘av Mercy, our monthly dance at the Library pub on Cowley Road. In the new year we’ll let you know our future movements, both in the websphere and with our own nights. Hope you all have a great Christmas - check out our local recommendations below; nothing but reggae, dub, roots and dancehall in Oxford and beyond. You know how we roll….
The Saturday, Mr Skylarkin’ invites DJ Derek to the Hi-Lo Jamaican Eating House for a evening of reggae courtesy of one of the most legendary UK DJs. Now in his 70th year, his Oxford shows always pull a massive crowd, and at just £3 to get in make sure you get down to Hi-Lo early doors. Continuing the festivities, Aidan invites you to his annual Reggae Christmas show at the O2 Academy on Christmas Eve, alongside old favourites Laid Blak. Tickets are only £6 in advance, and with Destanation and House of Roots also supplying the tunes you’d be a fool to miss it.
On the 27th December, the Natty Hi-Fi crew are back in East Oxford for their annual Christmas Dub at the Chester Arms pub. It’s free, with Caribbean food on sale and massive tunes all day. Check out the flyer. The following day Laid Blak return, (edit: despite being advertised as so, Laid Blak’s only gig in Oxford this festive season will be the above). The night’s been put on by the Shireboys, a group we’re unfamiliar with but looking forward to finding out more. With tons of local MCs and DJs on the bill, and at just a fiver in advance with music from 10pm till 3am, you could do a lot worse when filling you post-xmas/pre-NYE calender. Rounding off the Festive proceedings is the Seasonal Roots Reggae Foundation Jam at the East Oxford Community Centre on Friday 30th December. It’s £3 on the door, starts at 9pm till 3 in the morning. Check the flyer.
Then, for New Years Eve, the Library on Cowley Road is the only one place to be. With DJs from 5pm through till 12.30am, we’ll be holding down a classic party dancehall vibe from 9 till 10pm. The other selectors will be playing r’n’b and hip hop, funk and soul, with Lord ‘av Mercy! well and truely bringing the vibes from 9pm. It’s free so make sure you get down early! Pop back in next week where we’ll post up all the details, but for the meantime check the Facebook.
